Winter Festival

On December 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. the Eastmoreland Neighborhood Association (ENA) is bringing the community together for a new tradition: The Winter Celebration!

This free event is for the whole family
. It is a way for the ENA to say thank you, share joy, meet new neighbors and reconnect with old ones. It will take place on "the black top" in front of Duniway Elementary at the corner of SE Rex St. and SE Reed College Place.

Cookies, brownies, hot chocolate and hot cider will be served. Volunteers from the Garden Club will orchestrate Holiday crafts projects suitable for children.

Our own Portland Dickens Carolers will sing Holiday favorites from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The carolers will be dressed in beautiful Old English costumes representing the year 1843, when Charles Dickens published his famous story ‘A Christmas Carol”. Favorite carols will be sung in four-part harmony including "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "O Come All Ye Faithful", "O Christmas Tree", "Jingle Bells", "White Christmas", "Winter Wonderland", "Rudolph", and many more. Sing along will be encouraged. https://thedickenscarolers.com

The ENA is also taking this opportunity to partner with two different charitable organizations. The first one is Portland Toy & Joy Makers, the local toy drive founded by the Portland Fire & Rescue in 1914, supporting local families in need around Christmas time. To participate, please bring a new unwrapped toy; a collection box will be available onsite. https://www.toynjoymakers.org/

The second partner is Share the Warmth, a program supported by Windermere Moreland Real Estate. The program collects coats and blankets for the less fortunate. To contribute, please bring a warm coat or blanket in good condition. https://helpsharethewarmth.com/

The Great Eastmorelad Shakeout

The Great Eastmorelad Shakeout

The ShakeOut Drill is scheduled for 10:19 a.m. on October 19, 2023. In the event of a major earthquake or other disaster, Eastmoreland neighbors could provide critically needed support to each other and local schools. Here are three things you can do:

1. Review this weekly planner from the City of Portland and use it to help your family prepare.

2. Participate in the “Great Oregon Shakeout,” which is part of FEMA’s “Great American Shakeout” earthquake drill which will be held on Thursday, Oct 19. We are responding to the state’s website, www.shakeout.org/Oregon which provides information and materials your family can use. The website explains:

All neighborhood groups are encouraged to participate in the drill (or plan a more extensive exercise). Major earthquakes may happen anywhere you live, work, or travel. The ShakeOut is our chance to practice how to protect ourselves, and for everyone to become prepared. The goal is to prevent a major earthquake from becoming a catastrophe for you, your organization, and your community.… Everyone can participate! Individuals, families, businesses, schools, colleges, government agencies and organizations are all invited to register.

3. Contact the Eastmoreland Neighborhood Association’s Emergency Preparedness Committee with your questions and offers to help. We met with the Duniway Principal this week to discuss how neighbors could support the school’s Emergency Team and we’re working on a local emergency plan. We also encourage people to learn about Portland’s Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) and Basic Earthquake Emergency Node (BEECN) programs which are active but severely understaffed – both need new volunteers and information is available at https://www.portland.gov/pbem.

Please contact us by emailing ready@eastmoreland.org or calling Rob at 503-833-2266 with your questions and suggestions. - Rob Walton, Chair of the Eastmoreland Emergency Preparedness Committee

ENA Clean-up

ENA Clean-up

IT’S ON! Continuing a more than 20-year tradition, we will have the Eastmoreland Neighborhood Clean-up event between 9am - 1pm on Sunday, October 8. This year’s event will be held in Westmoreland Park in the parking lot near the south fields. As has been the case in past years, residents can responsibly dispose of a number of materials including:

● Yard Debris
● Waste Wood
● Bulk Waste
● Scrap Metal
● Household waste
● Other general debris

This is a great opportunity to get rid of those items in your yard, basement, attic, garage, and elsewhere in your home that are ready for disposal.

Don’t have the time or ability to bring your disposable items to the clean-up event? No problem. We are now offering a concierge service this year. You'll just need to leave items needing disposal in your driveway or curbside. We will pick up, deliver to the clean-up site, and dispose of them for you. Please contact Derek (derekb@stanfordalumni.org or 510-565-8525) to schedule this. There are a limited number of concierge collections.

In addition to the items listed above, we will also be collecting styrofoam (block and peanuts). Please note that we cannot accept any hazardous waste materials or contractor loads. Questions about what we can or can't accept? Please email us.

The cost is: $40+, depending on load size (or $100+ concierge service). All proceeds benefit ENA.  Look for more information on this site coming soon.

Want to get involved? We need volunteers. Please reach out to me at derekb@stanfordalumni.org if you’d like to volunteer or have questions about the event.

Portland Engagement Project Listening Session

HELP INFORM PORTLAND'S NEW CIVIC ENGAGEMENT MODEL!
Attend a Portland Engagement Project Listening Session

Monday, March 6 | 6:30-7:30 PM | Register Below for Zoom Link

The City of Portland’s Office of Community and Civic Life (Civic Life) wants to hear from all Portlanders how the City can improve our civic processes. Through the Portland Engagement Project (PEP), they seek your input to inform the creation of an equitable community engagement model that will help Portlanders and our government strengthen our relationship to solve issues today and into the future.

Please join SE Uplift, your neighbors and PEP’s listening partner Pregame for a dedicated session to gather your input on three key questions:

  1. If you need to tell the City something, or get information from the City, are you happy with your options?

  2. What is your idea for how the City could communicate better with you?

  3. How would you like to be involved with the City’s decisions and direction?
